Market Capitalization

Share price ร— total shares outstanding. The market's implied price tag for the whole company's equity.

Formula

Market cap = current share price ร— shares outstanding

Example

A simple calculation

Setup
Share price $150; 1B shares outstanding.
Calculation
$150 ร— 1B = $150B
Takeaway
$150B market cap. That's the equity value the market is currently assigning.

What it is

Market cap is the total value the stock market is currently placing on a company's equity. Multiply the current share price by all outstanding shares.

Why people use it

It's the quickest first-pass measure of company size. Market cap is also the basis for the standard size buckets:

  • Large-cap โ€” typically > $10B
  • Mid-cap โ€” ~$2B โ€“ $10B
  • Small-cap โ€” ~$300M โ€“ $2B, with micro- and nano-cap below

Market cap is NOT the price someone would pay to acquire the whole company โ€” that's enterprise value, which adds debt and subtracts cash.
